Project Mississippi #8: The Floating Hotel
In my last post, I mentioned when talking about stair that Id be trying to build some not so regular stairs.
Well here they are before sanding or painting. These were a little tricky, to me. I found it useful to just sit back with some coffee and rest after about every third step to let the glue set enough that they didnt try to move while I was doing more.
Here are a lot (a LOT) of doors wainting to be sanded and painted. I am aware that these are more than I actually needed. However, I made a temporary jig to cut them because of their small size. I decided to go ahead and purposely cut extras so that I wouldnt run short and have to go back and rig it up again to cut more. The doors were another one of those ideas that just sort of struck me out of the blue. I was happy with the way the boat looked when we left off yesterday, but something seemed to be amiss. These type boats flowed up and down the Mississippi River for years. Their main purpose were as tour boats. They were like floating hotels. There were doors all down the sides of them that led into various rooms and passageways. So we needed some doors.
So then I just had to decide on a color for those doors. As I was trying to decided between red or black to match the rest of the boat, I figured that either of those colors along with what is already done, and what I plan on later, would be maybe overdoing one of the two. So I figured a nuetral color, grey, would be fitting here. It sets the doors apart from the surrounding details without overdoing the main color scheme. Using a piece of scrap wood as a spacer to place them, it wound up in the end with one hundred and thirty doors total. I hope all those tiny people going in and out of their rooms dont disturb the birds too much.
I like how the spiral stairs turned out. I do not like how the photos of the spiral stairs turned out. I will try to get some better photos of this detail when I can get help from one of my sons to move it into better lighting. That may be after its done. At that time there will be a lot more to show as well though. So, until later…………………………..
